How to Make Gorgeous Polymer Clay Charms and Pendants - Do It Yourself Jewelry Making

Making your own jewelry for either personal purposes or for sale is highly rewarding. Not only do you get a great sense of achievement but you have something precious that, when made well, will last forever. A recent trend is making your own polymer clay pendants that are simple, inexpensive and not to mention absolutely beautiful.

1. Choose your design.

Of course, before you begin you will need to know what you would like to make. You can choose from anything that you can make! Your pendants can either be flat or 3-dimensional. The example I will use here is a flat, swirly lollipop.

2. Get your base.

To begin work on your lollipop you will need to mould 2 pieces out of your clay – a flat circle and a long stick. Once you have made these assemble them so they look like a lollipop. You can use whichever colour you like, such as white, blue or pink.

3. Add your detail.

What’s a swirly lollipop without swirls? Roll out a long thin piece that you can put on the base of your lollipop in a swirl. Once it’s on, squish it down so it’s flat and becomes one with the base of the lollipop, rather than sitting on top of it.

4. Think about how you want to attach it.

If your pendant is for a necklace or bracelet the best way to attach it would be via a jump ring. To do this you’ll need to poke a hole into the top of the lollipop using a sewing needle, or a toothpick if you prefer.

5. Bake it.

Lay your pendant on a baking tray and bake it according to the directions on the packet of your polymer clay. You may prefer to leave it to naturally dry on a counter or other flat surface overnight. Be sure that your pendants are fully dry before you proceed.

6. Seal it.

Using laquer or clear nail polish, coat your freshly-baked pendant one it’s cool in order to give it some extra strength and shine.

7. Attach it.

Put a plain silver jumpring through the hole you made in step 5 and close it using pliers.

And there you have a basic, handmade pendant! If you like you can use white or another basic colour and then paint the pendant once it’s baked and cooled. The options you have when making your own pendants is just about never-ending, so play around and have fun making gorgeous handmade charms and pendants.
